Spent today doing lots of relaxing. I made time to do some lifting for the first time in like 4 days. Sean’s mom made some bomb ass dinner, too. Thanks, Ms. Culligan! The day after tomorrow is 4th of July and I get to do some shooting. Super excited!

Wow according to WordPress, it has officially been 2 years since I started this blog. Thanks to everyone that stops by once in awhile!

In other news, the majority of my cameras are in need of repair. My OM-1 and M5 shutters are capping, my FED4 and Kiev 4M shutter curtains are broken, my Canon Autoboy is locked up and won’t turn on, I dropped my SRT102 so it’s acting up a bit, my Yashica T4 is falling apart and has a broken flash, one of my Trip 35s needs to have the lens fixed.. The only cameras I feel comfortable taking out are my Elan IIe and XA2 and Instax Wide.

Today I went to my Aunt’s place for a family BBQ gathering. It was good to see family again after so long. My relatives asked me about my future plans and after explaining the technicalities of JET Program to them, I started to realize both how long and short 5 years really is. Apps come out right before I turn 21. Time’s rolling by faster than I ever thought it would.

Wow it’s been awhile since I last updated. Time is going by super super fast. I just have to take a couple summer courses and then I can graduate at the end of the Fall semester… One semester earlier than normal! Pretty excited for to get out of school and apply for JET. I still don’t really have a set plan for the future and that kinda scares me sometimes.. It’s easy for me to say fuck it, but if I don’t take things carefully life is gonna fuck me.

During class I started to realize just how much I depend on some of my classmates for help on things and how incapable I have been during my entire time in college. Whether it’s depending on people for help on homework or asking stuff I should know about normal college stuff (selecting classes, when things are due, etc etc).. I always believed in being independent and only relying on yourself since at the end of the day you’re the only one you can rely on. I think I need to re evaluate some things and become a more capable person because once I graduate I can’t exactly expect people to be able to help me through everything. I guess no matter how mature I think I am, I do still need to grow up.

It kinda just hit me after a friend asked me what days I’m free… It’s Spring Break. I only have class twice a week so it’s not like it matters too much anyways, but yeah Spring Break. When I was a kid, I used to watch movies where people would go do wild, crazy shit during their Spring Break (I guess people actually do it.. It’s not just in the movies), but I really haven’t done anything like that. I guess since I’ve been working and stuff since I was 15/16 it never occurred to me that I should do anything special. To be honest, the last time I went on vacation (as in leaving the Bay Area) was probably around 3 years ago.

I’ve always felt like SF was categorically somewhere between a large city and a rural village in the sense that it’s pretty busy during the day but it’s dead as fuck during the night and there are really only 3 places in the city that stay busy with action (Downtown, Pier 39, and Chinatown in my opinion). I would really like to visit somewhere like NY or HK or go back to Tokyo where it’s really busy and there are plenty of people and light even when the sun sets. On the other hand, sometimes I think a place that is quiet and reserved yet culturally backwards than what I’m used to may be a good place to visit as well. As long as I have my camera then either would be cool haha.

Hello 2013.

Well guys we made it to 2013! Take that you fucking Mayans and your crafty fucking calendars! No, I’m just kidding haha but anyways I’m super grateful for all the things I’ve been able to do and for all the friends who have been super cool with me even though I can be super lame 99% of the time. I’m trying to be more outgoing this time around!

Anyways, here’s some film that I shot with Sean at the beach and a couple frames from around Golden Gate Park. Sean was kind enough to drop off a bunch of film to a lab near his place so I have some stuff to post now!

I posted some shots from the same day before on the blog but it was shots taken on my iPhone. I ran out of film fairly quickly so the previous shots are a little better imo, but I thought I would share these anyways

The Light.

Today I had Oceanography like usual. I ended up getting a C on my 2nd midterm, but because A LOT of people in my class failed, there is a make up opportunity to let us earn up to 15% more on our tests. Feeling good 🙂

After that, I bussed it to Sean’s place so we could do some shooting. We ended up swinging by the beach for a change of pace to shoot the Sunset. Yes, it’s not random snapshots of strangers for a change haha. The light was friggin awesome. We couldn’t have gotten there at a better time. I shot a whole roll of cheap 400 film in my T4. I mostly wanted to play with the shadows and the reflections of color on the wet sand. I think the shots came out great although I have no clue when I will have them developed. Expect them sometime next year? 🙂

After that, we headed to get some burgers to take back to Sean’s place. I forgot the name of the place we went to, but the shit was bomb. The burger filled me up pretty good which is rare. I normally need to eat fries and some other stuff to feel real full. We watched Battle Royale while eating. For all my non Japanese friends out there, it’s Hunger Games on crack. Check it out or even read the manga if you have the chance since it’s even more gruesome. :3

Now I’m back at home. Gotta study for Kanji 😦

Here’s some iPhone snaps from the beach. The camera on the 4/4S/5 is amazing. I mean, I have the older 4 and look at the images it outputs with only minor editing (only exposure and color correction). Of course the dynamic range is totally lacking when compared to ANY modern DSLR, but hey it’s excellent for a cell phone camera. The best part is, you can do the exact same edits as I have here on your iPhone on the go. It just looks great in my opinion. “The best camera is the one that’s with you.”
